HIT Scholarships launched 2008
22nd October 2007
Hospitality Industry Trust Scholarships Expands Scholarship Programme
This week the Hospitality Industry Trust (HIT) Scotland has launched this year’s search for the stars of tomorrow’s hospitality industry.
Entries to the expanded Emerging Talent Scholarship programme are now open. This year HIT is offering a record, 100 Emerging Talent Scholarships, 20 more than last year.
Applicants have the opportunity to train at places such as the Disney Institute in Florida, work with leading chefs and hoteliers or even create their own dream scholarship.
HIT has also added a new High Level Scholarship for more experienced industry leaders.
Emerging Talent Scholarships are open to people working across all aspects of the industry, from marketing and front of house to chefs and management, who are looking to further their careers. Final year students from partner Catering and Hospitality courses, needing vital experience to break into the industry, are also encouraged to apply.
There are six types of Emerging Talent Scholarships. Scholarships range from craft courses with leading chefs; learning experiences on management courses at the Disney Institute in Florida; scholarships placements at the best Scottish hotels to a fortnight working for the Jumeirah group working at their prestigious six star resorts in Dubai.
There are also designer courses which provide the opportunity to structure a learning experience in a particular area of interest. Past scholars have toured whisky facilities, spent two weeks touring different kitchens and worked in exclusive international boutique hotels.
The New High Level Scholarships are on offer to hotel general managers training to be the future leaders of the hospitality industry. The scholarship awards a place at the 10 day general managers’ programme at the renowned Cornell University in New York. Only four places are available.
Scholarships are awarded to those seeking to make a significant difference to Scottish Hospitality. They offer a unique opportunity to experience the very best. They recognise the need to continually update skills within the industry, encourage personal development and bring fresh thinking to Scotland, in order to remain at the forefront of international innovations.
David Cochrane, Chief Executive of HIT Scotland, is proud to announce the expanded programme. “Over the last 13 years the hospitality industry has come together to raise over two million pounds to help nearly 7,500 young people develop their careers through bursaries and scholarships. To be able to now offer over 100 scholarships is a phenomenal effort which we have to credit to our supporters, fundraisers and sponsors. We also have to thank the individuals who have taken part in previous years and shown how successful the scholarship programme is.”
Full details on the range of scholarships are available at www.hitscotland.org. Applications must be received by Friday 30th November.

Notes to Editors
The Scholarships on offer
A Learning Experience
The Disney Institute in Florida (www.disneyinstitute.com) or the Ecole Hoteliere Lausanne University in Switzerland (www.ehl.ch) await 30 scholars. They will have the chance to develop management skills in world renowned institutes of industry training.
A Hands on Experience
An ideal placement for those at middle management level or with supervisory experience is offered with the Jumeirah group in Dubai (www.jumeirah.com). Up to eight Scholars will spend up to two weeks at one of the world’s top hotels with learning experiences to match their six star rating.
A Craft Course
For individuals hoping to build a career in the kitchen, HIT Scotland has twelve places for aspiring chefs. They will spend time with trained development chefs undertaking activities such as learning how to create menus and refining key skills.
Five Star Experiences
HIT Scotland has built on the auld alliance to create ten placements in five star hotels in Scotland and France. Placements involve two to four weeks spent in a top hotel to experience what it takes to be the best.
Masterclasses and Innovation days
Masterclasses and innovation days are available for candidates who want to be motivated by the best in the business and learn from worldwide speakers at top industry events happening in Scotland.
High Level Scholarships
For the first time, this year there are four High Level Scholarships for individuals who are going to be the leaders of Scotland’s hospitality industry in the future. This scholarship will take place at the internationally renowned Cornell University in New York, with enrolment onto the General Managers Programme (www.hotelschool.cornell.edu).
Designer Courses
Uniquely, HIT also offers designer scholarships. If a candidate feels the other scholarship opportunities are not relevant to them or they have an idea for a scholarship that is not offered, HIT can look into their idea and see if they can make it happen. In the past scholarship students have travelled to Monaco to experience working in a boutique hotel in an international environment or have stayed closer to home such as the bar tender that wanted to specialise in whisky and underwent a placement working in a west coast distillery.
