Former barman turned opera singer sure to be a HIT.

17th July 2008

A barman turned opera singer is to entertain Scotland’s hospitality industry at a charity event this September.

Tony Henry will be performing at the Hospitality Industry Trust (HIT) Scotland POETS Lunch, a charity fundraising afternoon taking place at Glasgow’s Raddisson SAS hotel on Friday 5th September. The event will be compèred by BBC Scotland presenter and raconteur Tam Cowan.

Tony Henry has previously sung for the Queen, at an FA cup final and at the Royal Albert Hall. He worked at as barman in London before being discovered and has since gone on to create stunning versions of classic songs and famous arias by lifting pieces into the 21st century.

Tony is well known in football circles for his rendition of the Croatian national anthem which spurred the team on to success over England during their European Championship qualifier at Wembley.

During the opening ceremony Tony should have sung 'Mila kuda si planina', which roughly translates as 'You know my dear how we love your mountains'. A slip of the tongue led to him singing ‘kura si planina' or 'My dear, my penis is a mountain'.

The line was credited with relaxing the Croatian team leading to their early goal. Tony was made the unofficial mascot of the team during the tournament this summer and is sure to be a hit with football fans working in Scottish hospitality.

Tony said, “As a former barman I know how many unsung heroes there are in the hospitality industry. I am looking forward to using my talents to give them a well deserved afternoon off and to raise money for HIT Scotland. And, if things get a little too rowdy, my old bar skills may come in handy as well.”

The POETS Lunch will raise money for HIT Scotland’s scholarship and bursary programmes. Last year HIT Scotland donated £105,000 to students who struggle financially. They were also able to offer over 190 emerging talent scholarships to places such as Cornell, Dubai and Disney as well as closer to home. Both programmes aim to improve standards and broaden horizons in Scottish hospitality.

New Wave Laundries, Xpress Recruitment, and Davidson Asset Management have already come on board as sponsors but there are still limited opportunities available.

David Cochrane, Chief Executive of HIT Scotland, “Last year was the most successful fundraiser we have ever held in Glasgow. The generosity of the guests and their commitment to improving Scottish hospitality was on display during a fun filled afternoon.”

Tickets bought before the end of July cost just £60 or £65 after. Visit www.hitscotland.org for more information or phone 0131 557 5767.
