HIT Scotland are due to announce the Scholarships Programme and we are keen to advertise the wide selection of Scholarships available. To that end we want to promote the benefits of the Scholarships and the opportunities they enable. Here's HIT Scholar Andy Roger's story.
My first role in Hospitality was almost 20 years ago, when I left school, working in Malmaison in Glasgow. Having then lived abroad for a year and subsequently studying at Edinburgh University I rejoined Malmaison where I spent almost 11 years in a company that I really ‘grew up’ in.
I started on the Graduate Programme in Birmingham for two years and then spent 2 1/2 years in Glasgow Malmaison again before taking on my first General Manager’s role at 27 in Tunbridge Wells with Hotel du Vin.
After this I had the opportunity to move to the North East and open Malmaison in Aberdeen where I spent a fantastic three years, before returning to Glasgow as General Manager of One Devonshire Gardens. In 2013 I moved to my current location at Cameron House, where I was Operations Director, then Resort General Manager and now Resort Director.
Having been involved in HIT for a number of years, last year was the first time I had applied for a scholarship. It was a huge honour to be successful in my application and be awarded a scholarship at Glion University in London. Having worked in the Industry since University this was the first formal studies I had carried out in 14 years and I found it hugely challenging and rewarding.
I would urge all those considering applying for a Scholarship to identify the area they would like to pursue and apply for the opportunity to experience something as meaningful, productive and thought provoking as I did, whether it be a scholarship in a property or a more study based experience like Glion.
The opportunity certainly made me think about my business and the team I lead in a different way and since my return I have used a number of my learnings from last year in the workplace. Sometimes taking the opportunity to step away from the day to day, whatever level you are at, to really reflect on what you do and what you could do better can make a huge difference in what you can achieve with your business.
If you would like to apply for a scholarship, the 2017 programme launches on Thursday 29th September. To find out more click here
