From an early age I have always had a great passion for the hospitality industry and chose to study Hospitality Management at University.  I attended Shannon College of Hotel Management in Ireland and throughout my time there my love of the industry and the people who work in it grew.

I have worked with the Principal Hayley group for the last 7 years since graduating, working my way up from Graduate Manager to my the position of Conference and Banqueting Operations Manager in the Grand Central Hotel.  From successfully being in a senior departmental manager role for the last 3 years I felt I needed to evaluate my options and look at how I could progress in the industry.

After consulting with my peers about what scholarship would be beneficial for my progression, I applied for the Lausanne Management scholarship and was delighted when I was chosen at the HIT conference. The scholarship took place at the start of June in Lausanne, Switzerland. This course allowed me to step away from the day to day management of a busy Hotel operation into an environment where I got to spend time with fantastic, likeminded individuals, evaluating the way we work, the way we lead groups of people and take away some great new ideas and inspiring stories to help improve our skills and teams. Lausanne and the impressive surroundings of Ecole Hoteliere De Lausanne was the perfect environment to allow you to look at yourself and your style of management. They really made you think about how you work and what each individual could improve. It was also great to see how well the Scottish Hospitality industry was regarded and how they hold HIT Scotland in such high regard.

Since returning to work, I have been promoted to Food and Beverage Manager within the Grand Central Hotel and feel that my HIT Scholarship came at the perfect time as it instilled confidence and allowed me to fully evaluate my style of leadership.

I would recommend applying for a HIT Scotland scholarship to anyone thinking about it or anyone who wants to improve their skills and management styles. It really was a unique experience, and I will take the skills I learnt with me as I continue my development.

If you would like to apply for a scholarship, the 2017 programme launches on Thursday 29th September. To find out more click here
