The HIT team has made it to the first stage of their ascent of Gran Paradiso by reaching Rifugio Chabod at over 9,000 feet.
The weather worked for and against the team with the initial ascent bathed in glorious sunshine and a backdrop of stunning views of the Italian alps. However there was an unexpected change of plan when the team attempted their advanced alpine skills training and the guides felt the snow was too soft for a glacier traverse to Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele.
Instead the group will return to base camp tomorrow to collect snow shoes before ascending to Vittorio Emanuele and the final push to the summit on Sunday morning.
